Takiharuru | Pilots Beach
We are situated on the end of the Otago Peninsula (1245 Harington Point Road Dunedin) which is about a 45 minute - 1 hour drive from Dunedin
There are a few options to get to us:
Self drive in your own vehicle or join our minibus tour (Otago Peninsula In-Depth tour). These are by far the best options, buses are infrequent (and stop a few kilometres away) and taxi/uber can be unreliable (see below)
For those self driving to us:
The tour starts from within the royal albatross centre situated at the end of the Otago Peninsula at Pukekura/Taiaroa Head. Getting to Blue Penguins Pukekura is easy. Drive yourself, and allow 60 minutes from Central Dunedin. There is PLENTY of parking available at our location (including space for buses or large campervans). Some people worry about nighttime driving on the way home after the tour, but don’t worry, as there is almost no traffic heading towards Dunedin (with the exception of fellow penguin watchers), places to pull over and let other traffic past and most of the road back to the city is well lit. The BEST ROAD to take is the one that follows alongside the Otago Harbour (Portobello Road then Harington Point Road).
Please check in within the centre 15 minutes prior to the tour start time.
NEED TRANSPORT FROM DUNEDIN ?
Check out our daily Otago Peninsula In-Depth Tour option. A excellent guided tour of the Otago Peninsula first, before we join our Blue Penguins Pukekura Experience Tour. See other wildlife and other scenic parts of the peninsula.
Other options:
Because we are so far from Dunedin there is no bus service to our reserve (Bus No. 18 stops at Harington Point 2.5 km away and infrequent bus service during the day). Taxi’s and Uber can be unreliable, particularly for return journeys.
